Background/Purpose: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections are a major healthcare concern. We compared risk factors, comorbidities, and outcomes of invasive and noninvasive CRE infections among a patient cohort identified through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Emerging Infections Program Healthcare-Associated Infections Community Interface.
Methods: We defined incident CRE cases as Enterobacterales resistant to one or more carbapenems from normally sterile sites or urine among Denver metropolitan area residents between 2013 and 2024. We categorized exposures as invasive (normally sterile site) or noninvasive (urine only) CRE infection. Outcomes included hospitalization on the day of incident specimen collection (DISC) or 29 days after, ICU admission within seven days of DISC, post-acute care, and mortality. We compared demographics, age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI), risk factors, and outcomes using t-tests and Chi-square tests.
